Memories of Me

Dear Friends,
I can remember my child hood days from age three and this is true. I am almost two years older than my sister Cynthia. My father left his family in the Bahamas to find work on the "Contract" in the United States. The Contract was an agreement made between the United States Government and the Duke Of Windsor who was the Governor of The Bahamian Colony, in the mid 20TH century. He sought employment for Bahamian Men and Women to work as Migrant Workers on farms in The United States. Men and women came from all of the Islands. The majority of Women who enlisted came from Cat Island. I will tell you about them.

This agreement was made in 1943.

Well, my Father was able to build a small house for my Mother, before he left town, but I was born while he worked in Florida. I guess I was a "Fare well " baby. My sister perhaps was a "Return Home baby". My father enlisted twice. I can still remember those early years. I was an only child until my sister came along. Every thing changed drastically for me because she was now the new baby. My father went back.

My mother prepared a special formula, in brand new "Baby Bottles" for her, my " milk bottle" was taken away. I was upset about this at three years old I can still remember this after all of these years.

Times were hard during the War, and we had to wait until my Father received his salary which was sent home to his "Post Office Bank Account" in Nassau. My mother with drew the funds to take care of us.

One night, when my mother had retired for the night and went to sleep with my sister in a Crib nearby, I found my way in the dark into our small kitchen, stood up on a chair and found the warm bottles of milk which my Mother had made for my baby sister.

With my small hands, I took one bottle removed the "Nipple" and began to drink the warm milk to my delight. My mother must have heard me as I tried to get down from the chair. She spanked my legs, telling me that I was a grown girl now and milk from a baby's bottle was for babies.
I grew up fast that year and when I turned four, I was still waiting for my Father who worked on Farms in Florida, Maryland, Virginia, Georgia, etc to come home.

I promise to continue this story, good night.
